Don’t worry if your AeroPress is hard to push. This is normal. When you press the plunger, you are pressing against the pressure in the chamber. This pressure causes resistance which in turn as you depress the plunger forces the hot water through the coffee grounds to make your coffee. While you may think your AeroPress is hard to push that resistance is absolutely normal.

That being said there are some things which can make your AeroPress even more difficult to push. And we’ll cover those shortly.

Such a popular coffee maker

Since its invention back in 2005, the AeroPress has become one of the most convenient and well-loved coffee makers in the world. It’s on sale in more than 80 countries so the results speak for themselves.

The beauty of the AeroPress is that it’s incredibly simple to use compared to more complex coffee machines such as the espresso machine.

However, one of the most common problems is that some people find the AeroPress difficult to push. Is there a reason for this and what can be done about it?

Why is my AeroPress hard to push??

An AeroPress works through the use of a plunger which you depress by hand. As you do this, pressure builds up inside the device which results in the solubility of the grounds increasing. The result? A rich, strong and delicious cup of coffee.

This whole process is simple but the plunger shouldn’t be ‘easy’ to push; there should be some resistance. But if there are problems with suction or too much pressure, you’ll find that it’s as good as impossible to plunge it at all.

This can be challenging for most people but becomes even more of a problem for people who have strength problems for conditions like arthritis.

How to fix problems with an AeroPress that is hard to push

While it can be incredibly frustrating to find that you can’t push your AeroPress, there is some good news. There are several things you can do to improve how easy it is to push and for the most part, these will solve the problem. If you’re still having issues after trying these things, then it might be a fault with the product.

Slow down

An AeroPress is designed to make coffee quickly and conveniently. However, that doesn’t mean rushing. If you try to push the plunger down too quickly, the coffee grounds will compact.

AeroPress can be hard to press

Worst case is that they’ll come exploding out and the best case is that it’ll be difficult to push. So, take a deep breath and plunge your AeroPress using a slow, controlled motion.

Change the way you grind your coffee

When using an AeroPress, you want to avoid grinding the beans too coarsely. When you do this, they will be far more resistant and will stand up to the pressure of the plunger, therefore making it harder to use. It’s as simple as grinding your coffee more finely and you’ll likely find that this solves the problem.

Think about cup size

Something as seemingly insignificant as the size of your cup could be causing problems when using your AeroPress. When you use a very small cup that’s only just compatible with the device, this can make things more difficult. Using a larger cup will create more room for the coffee to come out.

Make sure your AeroPress is clean

One of the biggest problems with using a dirty AeroPress is that old coffee grounds will interfere with the taste of the drink you’re making. Nobody wants this.

Moreover, you’ll find that any debris will make it much more difficult to push the plunger so make sure that you clean your device after every use. It’s really quick and takes no more than 30 seconds.

But when all is said and done

At the end of the day, it is highly likely that even though you think your AeroPress is hard to push – the actuality is that the resistance you’re feeling is absolutely normal. It’s just the way the AeroPress works.
