But what are these devices, how do they work and are they worth the money? In this guide, you’re about to find out!

What is cold brew coffee?

The very name ‘cold brew coffee’ tells us a lot about this caffeinated drink. Cold brew coffee is a type of beverage which sees ground coffee steeped in cold or room temperature water for a much longer period of time than when using hot water. You can see the process and learn more about this chilly brew in the video below.

Why would you do this, we hear you ask? Well, if you find regular coffee too strong or rich then you might enjoy cold brew for its much smoother and less acidic taste.

The reason for this is that owing to the lack of heat, the solubles within the coffee grounds cannot dissolve entirely which removes much of the bitterness associated with hot coffee. Moreover, this brewing process yields a much sweeter drink preferred by many.

However, it is essential to make sure that the coffee is given an appropriate amount of time to steep. Failing to do this will mean that nothing dissolves and you’ll end up with a drink that is closer to coffee flavoured water.

What is a cold brew coffee maker?

There are so many different types of coffee maker on the market that it can quickly become confusing when making a purchase. However, it is important that, if you are looking to make cold brew coffee, you choose the right device. You’re not going to achieve this with an espresso machine or pod machine.

Cold brew coffee makers are much simpler but there are two different kinds. The first type is similar to a filter coffee machine as it uses a drip method for brewing where water gradually makes its way through the grounds. Only in this case, the process is far slower, usually taking a good few hours.

Other cold brew coffee makers rely on immersion brewing and this means that the coffee grounds are steeped in room temperature or cold water for anywhere between twelve and twenty-four hours.

This is a slower method but many agree that it’s the best. That said, either type of cold brew coffee maker will yield the sweet, smooth result you are looking for that hardly contains any bitterness.
