If you’re looking for a hot chocolate maker you can use at home you’ve got a few different options.
The first is to buy one of the very few bespoke hot chocolate makers. The second, and much cheaper option, is to use a milk frother. The third is to consider one of the ‘pod type’ coffee makers. Keurig, Nescafe Dolce Gusto and Nespresso are just some of the coffee makers for which you can buy hot chocolate pods.
Your options in brief:
1 – Milk frother.
2 – Bespoke system.
3 – Pod system.
But let’s look at those three options in a little more detail.
The best hot chocolate maker – your choices
This is the most popular option if you’re looking to make lovely hot chocolate at home.
We’ve reviewed many milk frothers on this website. The clue’s in our name. The good news is you can use any to make hot chocolate. What’s more the process of making hot chocolate at home is quite simple.
You can use your milk frother as a hot chocolate maker in a couple of ways. If you’re using powdered hot chocolate pour the milk into the frother first then add the powder. Turn on the machine as normal and let the frother do its thing.
If you’re using actual chocolate instead of powder (and why wouldn’t you?) it takes a little more prep. You firstly have to chop or preferably grate your solid chocolate chunks. Add the chocolate to your cup and then steam your milk in the frother. Add the frothed milk to the cup and leave for a minute. Then stir vigorously.
And that’s it. You can of course add embellishments like different flavoured syrups. And use a cocoa shaker for the finishing touch. But the main thing is to grate the chocolate finely enough. Otherwise you’ll find a soggy, yucky mess in the bottom of your cup.
Bespoke hot chocolate machine
If you go for this option you’re very limited in the machine you can choose. In fact, I know of only one such device available in the UK.
The Velvetiser by Hotel Chocolat is a fantastic machine. It’s a great device to have in your kitchen. But it’s very expensive. However, it does make wonderful hot chocolate. Though not everyone wants to shell out £100 on a hot chocolate maker and then pay around £1.20 a drink every time they use it.
But, for a little bit of choccy luxury we highly recommend it. You can read our Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser review here.
Pod coffee maker
Without doubt the most convenient option for a home hot chocolate maker. But also the least satisfying. Most pod systems will have hot chocolate capsules.
The big advantage of a pod system of course is how easy it is to use. There’s no need to grate chocolate, no mess, no need to clean the device after every use. Just fill with water, pop in the pod and press the ‘on’ button. Nothing could be easier.
But the results are disappointing. The drink is bland. Nowhere near as tasty as that produced by a milk frother.
The best hot chocolate maker – the final verdict
As with most things in life, taking the time to do things properly really pays off.
Forget a pod style coffee machine. If you don’t mind splashing the cash and see hot chocolate as an occasional indulgent treat we’d recommend the Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser.
But, if you’re a regular hot chocolate drinker your milk frother is going to be your best friend. It’ a wonderfully versatile and easy to use appliance which every hot chocolate fan should have in their kitchen.
So, for most of us, the answer to finding the best hot chocolate maker is to buy a milk frother. But which is the best?
