How to froth milk at home

Facebooktwitterpinterestmail

There are some drinks that require plain milk straight from the bottle; these are notoriously easy to make at home. However, what do you do when you want to create a frothy coffee in the comfort of your own kitchen? You don’t have all the equipment that a barista has, so how do you froth your milk?

There are multiple ways that you can create frothy milk at home but the best option is to buy a dedicated milk frother. This will deliver quick and easy results that are identical to the foamy milk you get when you buy coffee from your local cafe.

Why would you want to make frothy milk at home?

If you have a taste for a professional cup of coffee that hits just right with every sip then it is important to get a couple of things spot on. The taste of the drink is essential (which is why you should always use the best quality coffee beans or tastiest chocolate) but you cannot omit to pay attention to the texture of the froth. It needs to be thick, rich and long-lasting.

Frothing milk causes air bubbles to develop inside the liquid changing the texture to a much more light and foamy consistency. Without frothed milk, some of the most well-loved coffee drinks would not be the same as what you get in a coffee shop.

The simple answer as to why you would want to froth milk at home is simply because it allows you to recreate your favourite drinks exactly. Which is why I always use a milk frother.

I want that sweet foamy coffee or frothy hot chocolate I get at Costa without having to spend megabucks or making a special journey into town. If I want a cappuccino, cafe latte or any other beverage made with frothed milk I can whip it up quickly and easily, and at a fraction of the cost, in my own kitchen.

What drinks can you make with frothy milk?

Frothed milk is a very versatile ingredient and can be used in a wide range of drinks. Most popularly it is used in cappuccino and macchiato. It is also great for making a creamy latte and even the various tea lattes on offer. And of course you can make a brilliant hot chocolate.

How to froth milk at home with a milk frother

Milk frothers are widely available in stores and online. There are different types of milk frother but the most popular are probably the handheld devices. They are small tools that are easy to store and are incredibly affordable.

While there are many benefits to using a milk frother, a lot of people are still unsure about how to use them. If this sounds like you, don’t worry, they are fantastically easy to get to grips with and with our step by step guide, you’ll be frothing in no time.

We’ve itemised the process below but you can see a handheld frother in action in the video below.

The frothing process

1. Begin by pouring your desired quantity of milk into a microwavable jug. The amount you will need will depend on how many drinks you are making but in any case, be sure to avoid filling the jug more than a third of the way up otherwise the foam may spill over the top.
2. Milk froths best when it is warm so take your jug and pop it into the microwave for around 45-60 seconds. It is possible to heat the milk on the stove, if you prefer, but this method will take longer.
3. Now take your handheld milk frother and tilt the jug slightly before inserting the milk frother into the liquid.
4. You will need to turn the milk frother on and keep it moving as it works its magic. Moving in a slow, repetitive motion from the top of the liquid to the bottom will produce the best results.
5. It will take about 45 seconds before you will notice that the texture of the milk has gone from liquid to foam and you are now ready to add it to your drink.

If that sounds like too much hard work (it really isn’t) you can use an automatic milk frother. These devices not only froth but also warm your milk. And they do so at the touch of a button.

But I have to confess that for speed and convenience I usually use a handheld frother. You can even use one of these frothers with instant coffee to add an extra texture to a your drink.

If you don’t have a milk frother, there are many other ways that you can achieve a similar result. It pays to be innovative but here are some of our favourite ways to froth milk without a milk frother.

  • Many people turn their French coffee press into a multipurpose tool when it comes to frothing milk. You can add milk and move the plunger up and down until the foam is created. However, this method may take a little longer depending on how fast you can plunge.
  • You can also pour the milk into a mason jar and tightly screw on the lid. Now, it’s time for something of a workout as you vigorously shake the milk to encourage the air bubbles to develop.
  • You will likely have other tools around the kitchen that can serve a similar purpose to a milk frother. Things like blenders and electric whisks work well. If you don’t have either of these then it is also possible to use a hand whisk but again, this will take more time.

Full fat milk froths far better than any other kind and this is because of the type of protein that is present within the milk. However, if you cannot have full fat milk, semi skimmed and skimmed milks will froth, just not quite as well.

For people on a non-dairy diet, there are various plant-based milks that froth well. However, this is not true of all products. The best options for frothing are oat milk, soy milk and pea milk. That said, almond milk is becoming very popular and thanks to its higher fat content, it boasts the ability to froth almost as well as full fat dairy milk.
