‘Coffee shop quality froth at the touch of a button.’ That’s the claim Dualit makes about their milk frother. But is it as good as they say? And is it worth the price tag which places it at the premium end of the milk frother market? Let’s find out.

Dualit milk frother review

The first thing you notice about this frother is its elegant good looks. It’s very stylish. It won’t look out of place in any kitchen and you won’t be shy of leaving this little beauty out on the counter top.

But, and putting good looks to one side, this is the most important thing, does it produce nicely frothed milk? You won’t be surprised to learn that it does. The amount of foam it makes is impressive and using this frother is a breeze.

Just press the button on the front of the unit to choose your programme; hot foam, cold foam or heat milk. The colour of the button matches the programme you’ve chosen:

  • Red – heat milk.
  • Blue – cold foam.
  • Green – hot foam.

The Dualit milk frother has an automatic shut off so there is no risk of burning the milk. The big, big thing to say about this frother is that it does produce really thick and rich foam. And that’s what you need to know.

The Dualit milk frother really does make rich, creamy foam. It’s easy to use, the auto shut off guarantees perfect results every time and after dispensing your milk it’s very easy to clean.

Let’s look at the frother in a bit more detail.

Features of the Dualit milk frother

  • Patented intelligent heating cycle.
  • Spill free spout.
  • Patented dual function motor.
  • Magnetic removable whisk.
  • 3 in 1 functionality (hot and cold froth, heated milk).
  • Easy to clean.
  • Non-stick interior coating.
  • Non-slip rubber feet.
  • Automatic turn off.

Dualit also claims that their device is cordless (once frothed) which is a bit disingenuous. It’s like saying an electric kettle is cordless once you lift it off its power base to pour out the water. But apart from that, this frother really does live up to Dualit’s claims.

Dualit is one of the best known brands in the kitchen industry and has a very good and long-standing reputation. From toasters and kettles to coffee making equipment and everything in between, when it comes to kitchen appliances Dualit is one of the go-to brands. You know what you’re going to get – a well-built, reliable and high-quality appliance. And when it comes to milk frothers Dualit have few equals.

Personally, and in the spirit of full disclosure, I love Dualit as a brand. At various times over the years I’ve purchased a lot of their small kitchen appliances. And I absolutely swear by the Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser which Dualit makes for them.

So, with that out of the way, let’s get on with our Dualit milk frother review.

When it comes to frothing milk, you need a product that is reliable and that produces light, airy, rich foam.

An electric milk frother is beautifully easy to use and gives you the added advantage of being able to sit back while it does the work for you. This electric milk frother from Dualit has a range of impressive features that we just can’t wait to share with you.

The Dualit milk frother in action

What better test than to see the frother in action? We took this device for a test drive and were really impressed with the results. The first thing we noticed is that this frother is nice and compact and hardly takes up any room in your kitchen at all.

It also feels very sturdy and has a good quality ‘build’ feel to it with some nice finishes like the sealed rubber on/off button which is large and easy to press.

To begin with we (obviously!) needed to pour some milk into the unit. There is a handy fill line inside the unit which is very clear and prevents you from overfilling it and causing it to overflow with foam. The operation is very straightforward requiring nothing more than a single button press on the base of the unit.

As mentioned previously, you can simply leave this frother to work unattended and it will automatically turn itself off when its done – which is a nice touch. One thing we also noticed was just how quiet it was, it barely produces anything more than a slight humming/whirring sound when it’s operating. Once complete you can remove the lid and begin pouring.

As we’ve said throughout this review it produces a really nice foam to the milk. We were able to produce a very nice coffee using this frother and an espresso maker. For more infor see our milk frother recipes page.

Cleaning the frother was also relatively straight forward too. The whisking mechanism can be easily removed because it is held in by magnets. This of course makes cleaning so much easier and when combined with the non-stick interior it only takes a few moments to rinse and wipe down the unit.

Who are Dualit?

Dualit was founded by a German inventor by the name of Max Gort-Barten who had a passion for creating. Back in the 1940s, he began his empire making dual light heaters; no prizes for guessing how the brand earned its name, then!

Over time, Dualit grew and more and more appliances were brought into production. By the 1990s, Dualit was a name synonymous with quality and high standards and this reputation continued to grow.

Today, the brand offers a range of kitchen equipment but what we’re interested in are the coffee making accessories. From coffee machines to tampers, milk frothers to grinders; the coffee lover will find everything they need from this brand. Read more about Dualit here.

What features does the Dualit milk frother have?

The Dualit milk frother has a very generous 500ml capacity which gives you the option to make more froth in one go; great if you’re making coffee for several people at once. It takes just 70 seconds for the frother to heat the milk and turn it into a delicate foam; in the meantime, you can get on with brewing your coffee for a much more convenient experience.

One of the things that many people find difficult with some electric frothers is that they are notoriously difficult to clean. However, it would appear that Dualit has tackled this problem head on and included a removable whisk that makes cleaning the device easier than ever. It’s made from plastic and so is durable and doesn’t carry the risk of anything sticking to the inside.

This magnetic removable whisk is a very neat feature. If you’re simply heating milk you remove the whisk so the milk isn’t foamed. But the micro foam it produces is ideal for a flat white.

This is a corded electric appliance which is great since there is no risk of running out of battery power. It’s also incredibly safe to use and simple too; at the touch of a button, you’re on your way to perfectly frothed milk.

The functionality of the frother is basic. Even the cheapest of electric milk frothers offer the three pre-set programmes that the Dualit does. That said you can use this frother to make everything from milkshakes to lattes, hot chocolates to cappuccino and much more.

Something that is obvious from using this frother for a short time is that the Dualit milk frother produces some of the most remarkable results out there. The foam is rich, creamy and super thick.

Other reviewers have described it as almost stiff, meaning it won’t dissipate easily, making that beautiful texture last throughout the drink. What’s even more impressive is that many users report just as impressive results when frothing plant based milks; something that not all products can boast.

What are the pros and cons of the Dualit milk frother?

Pros

  • Makes thick foam.
  • One touch control.
  • Large capacity .
  • Easy to clean.

Cons

  • Users report reliability issues.
  • Only three pre-set programmes.
  • Expensive compared to other triple function electric milk frothers.

Should I buy the Dualit milk frother?

I have to admit I’m torn here. The Dualit milk frother is outstanding at what it does – and that is making thick foam. But at the end of the day it only has the three basic functions. Which isn’t that impressive when you compare it to the albeit much more costly Severin SM 3587.

Nevertheless at over £50 ($67) it is a tad more expensive than other electric milk frothers. But is it value for money? I would say so. But there is an elephant in the room.

Some users have reported reliability issues. And yes, I realise that I’ve spent half of this review saying how well made and reliable Dualit products are. Personally I’ve never had an issue with any Dualit product.

On the face of it the number of reviews left on Amazon reporting issues is a concern but if you look deeper those negative reviews are from a couple of years ago.

With over 70% five star reviews I’m confident any issues (if indeed there were any) have been resolved and you can be confident in the quality of the device.

This frother offers a way to easily make professional level foamed milk for a variety of drinks. If you don’t like the idea of being limited on what you can do with a milk frother then we would highly recommend this product. It allows for hot and cold frothing which is the kind of versatility we can get excited about.

We would also recommend the Dualit milk frother for people who want a more relaxed coffee making experience. Where the user would need to put in the effort when using a handheld milk frother, this one requires nothing more than pressing a button and letting the frother work its magic.

While it may be a little more expensive than other types of milk frother, the quality of the foam and the excellent density ensures professional barista results every time.

In short – it’s a thumbs up from us.
