De Longhi Magnifica Coffee Machine Review

One of the most popular coffee machines on Amazon the De Longhi Magnifica is ranked number 1 in the filter coffee and espresso combination category. Thousands have been sold. Sitting in the higher price bracket for home kitchen appliances this isn’t a cheap device. But, as we’ll see, it’s well worth digging a little deeper into the piggy bank. But let’s start at the beginning.

What is the De Longhi Magnifica coffee machine?

The shorthand definition is that the Magnifica is a coffee machine with a built-in milk frother. But that doesn’t really tell the full story.

The De’Longhi Magnifica is a bean to cup machine with an integrated grinder that really does enable you to produce barista quality coffee at home.

Now I’m aware that all manufacturers of coffee machines and milk frothers say their devices produce drinks of the quality you’d expect to find in Costa or Starbucks.

But this machine really delivers – and you can make two cups of coffee at once. No more waiting around if your partner wins the race to the kitchen in the morning.

User’s review of the De Longhi Magnifica coffee machine

As this is a bean to cup machine you definitely get a fresher cup of coffee. Making a refreshing brew is very easy.

1 – Fill the tank with fresh water being careful not to exceed the max line.
2 – Fill the container on the top of the machine with your coffee beans.
3 – Adjust the coffee strength – simply turn the dial on the front of the Magnifica.
4 – Choose quantity of coffee – again this is done via a dial on the front of the machine but may take a little trial and error to get right.
5 – Place your cup or cups under the spouts.
6 – Choose to make one or two cups of coffee.
7 – Sit back while the Magnifica grinds the beans and delivers your coffee.

I love the way you can choose between one or two cups of coffee. I’ve probably lived a very sheltered life but I’ve never had a coffee machine before that can do this. One of life’s small pleasures.

Grounds for a get up and go espresso

You don’t have to grind beans to make a brew. By pressing a button on the front of the machine you can opt to make an espresso from ground coffee. Pressing the button disables the grinder and you simply load the grounds into the funnel and off you go. Easy peasey. Just remember to only add one measure of ground coffee at a time and to re-engage the grinder when you want to switch back to making your drink from beans.

Using the milk frother

You can see the milk frother on the right as you look at the machine. It’s recommended you use semi-skimmed milk to make the best foam. Using the frother is easy enough. Once you have your coffee prepared, press the steam button on the control panel. When the light stops flashing the frother is ready. Position the frother in your milk frothing jug, turn the steam knob and let the Magnifica do its thing. Quick tip – to make a creamier foam rotate your container.

A note about the built-in coffee grinder

The integrated grinder has been factory set but you can change it. You can then choose from seven levels of grind.

This is easily done by rotating the adjustment knob – 1 is the finest grind with 7 the coarsest.

The degree of grind determines how quickly the coffee is delivered.

DE Longhi recommends you leave the grinder at the factory settings but It may take a little experimenting to get the perfect setting for you.

But the benefit of this is you get to drink even more coffee.

What are the best features of the Magnifica?

To be honest there are so many good points about this device. It even has a nifty cup warmer tray. De Longhi really has thought of just about everything. But you may have guessed my favourite feature is being able to choose to make two cups of coffee at once. Sad I know but this was a life changer for me.

Apart from that being able to use ground coffee as well as beans is a big plus and of course the built-in milk frother is so convenient. It also means you can make amazing cappuccinos.

What’s in the box?

Once you’ve ripped open the box from Amazon – you can get this device on Prime so it’ll be with you the day after ordering – this is what you’ll find:

  • De Longhi Magnifica coffee machine
  • Packet of descaler
  • Measuring spoon
  • Instruction manual
  • Cable and plug

Bonus tip

The manual supplied with the coffee machine is very comprehensive. I know that most of us simply bypass the instructions on electrical products and plug them straight in but do try to resist. I’d strongly recommend reading through the manual as taking some time in setting up the machine will really pay off. You’ll soon be turning out quality cups of coffee.

Should I buy the De Longhi Magnifica?

In its various versions this has been one of the most popular bean to cup coffee machines on Amazon. From what we’ve written so far, it’s easy to see why. But it’s not all sweetness and light. So, let’s look at the pros and cons, the highs and lows so you can make up your own mind on whether to splash your hard-earned cash on this device.

The best bits

  • Makes fantastic coffee from hard hitting espresso to frothy cappuccino.
  • Make one or two cups of coffee at the same time.
  • Built-in adjustable grinder.
  • Built-in milk frother.
  • Excellent build quality – it’s mostly made from very rigid plastic but it is incredibly robust. This device will last for years.
  • Easy to clean.

The downsides

  • Cost – at over £200 it will be out of the reach of some. Other coffee lovers will see it as great value.
  • Like any manufacturer De Longhi recommends you only use their own descaler. But this will become very expensive very quickly and there is no need. Regular cleaning and descaling with products you already have in the cupboard will be absolutely fine.

So, there you go. Our recommendation?

The De’Longhi Magnifica is a definite five-star coffee machine which will look fantastic in your kitchen and turn out cup after cup of tasty coffee.

I’ve had 2 off these machines and yes they do make great coffee. But both machines have electrical issues after 12 months and the second 1 we brought , cup warmer never worked from new. As both machines needed a new motherboard after 12 months at a cost of 280, which does not last another 12 months.
So yes it makes a nice coffee but if you use the machine twice daily expect to have issue shortly after 12 months. I wouldn’t spend more than 350, they don’t last and at 800 not worth it.
