Hands on Bonsenkitchen milk frother review

The Bonsenkitchen milk frother is one of the best value frothers on the market. At around a tenner buying this device won’t hit you very hard in the pocket but it does as good a job, if not a better one, than other milk frothers which cost many times the price.

The Bosenkitchen Milk Frother is a one-piece device powered by two AA batteries. It has a fixed stainless steel whisk and stem with a silver grey hard plastic body.

The plastic body has a finger grip, battery compartment and the on / off button. The on / off button has to remain depressed to keep the whisk spinning. To stop the whisk simply release the button.

Unboxing the Bonsenkitchen milk frother

When the package arrives from Amazon, you’ll find the frother well protected within its own cardboard box within outer packaging. There is an instruction booklet included in the package but you really don’t need it.

I know that we’re supposed to read the instructions whenever we use a new appliance. But honestly, this has got to be the easiest of all kitchen gadgets to use. Just install the batteries, press the on / off switch and you’re rocking and rolling. Or rather frothing and foaming.

So, what else can you expect when you receive your milk frother? Check out our unboxing video below.

What’s in the box?

  • Handheld milk frother.
  • Instruction booklet.
  • Two AA batteries.

Features of the Bonsenkitchen milk frother

  • Lightweight handheld milk frother.
  • Weighs only 106 grams with batteries installed.
  • Creates rich foam in only 30 seconds for cappuccino, latte, hot chocolate and more.
  • Powered by two AA batteries (supplied).
  • Stainless steel (304) stem and whisk.

Using the frother

As you can see from the video this milk frother is very easy to use. The plastic body is very well designed and the finger grip makes it comfortable to hold. The on / off switch is located at the end of the body and you need to keep it pushed down to keep the whisk spinning.

Do take care not to switch the frother on before you put it into the milk. If you do so the milk will splatter everywhere. Wait until the whisk head is placed in the milk before turning the device on.

Once you begin to froth slowly move the milk frother in a gentle circular motion. As the foam begins to form keep the whisk head near the top of the milk. You will see the milk starting to foam within moments but after about 30 seconds you’ll see the froth becoming dense and thick.

Once you get the foam to a rich consistency turn off the device and quickly add the froth to your pre-prepared coffee. Unless you’re frothing directly into the cup of course.

You can froth warm or cold milk. It’s up to you but the temperature of the milk depends on your taste and the drink you’re preparing. You can use the frother for hot or cold drinks. If you’re frothing warm milk don’t heat it to more than 60℃/140℉. If the milk is too hot it won’t bind and froth.

For the best results always use whole milk. Once you find a milk which froths well stick with it as different milks behave differently when frothed. If you want to use vegan milk you should only use the specially formulated barista milks.

You will find these vegan milks in lots of flavours including oat, almond, coconut, pea and more. Check out our buyer’s guide for more information.

Whichever milk you use remember to clean your Bonsenkitchen milk frother after every use. To clean the device simply hold the whisk head under running water. Give it a quick shake and you’re done.

Don’t worry about harming the whisk with water as the stainless steel will never rust. If the plastic body needs cleaning just rub it over with a damp cloth and it’ll be as good as new.

    1. No. And I’m not sure why you’d even consider it. Just hold it under a running tap or run the whisk in some hot soapy water. Make sure of course you keep the plastic body (and the batteries) well away from the water.
