Severin milk frother reviews
Severin SM 3587 Induction Milk Frother
One of the shortcomings of many automatic milk frothers is that they have limited options and that they heat the milk to a single preset temperature. The Severin SM 3587 milk frother blows those limitations away.
It has an amazing 13 programmes to choose from which can be used for making anything from a frothy cappuccino to baby formula. Unlike most forthers you’re also able to make hot chocolate from actual chocolate chunks. In truth you’re unlikely to use all the options but they are there if you need them.
Powered by a 500 watt motor you are able to adjust the temperature from 45-65°c. Whether 65°c is hot enough for everyone is open to debate but the built-in induction technology ensures your milk won’t burn.
Using the Severin SM 3587 is easy enough. Make sure the whisk is in place , pour your milk into the jug, pop on the lid and then turn the dial on the front of the appliance until you find your programme. Press the dial once you’re happy to confirm your choice and to select the temperature and that’s it.
You can see the frother in action in the video below.
There is an LED indicator running around the jug which glows red for hot or blue for cold depending on which programme you’re running.
A common complaint of other milk frothers is the small capacity. You can only make enough foam for one, sometimes two cups of coffee. The SM 387 is very different. With a huge 700ml capacity you can froth an awful lot of milk in this device.
In case you’re wondering the 13 integrated programmes include; hot or cold froth, heating milk, hot chocolate, vegan milk, lactose free milk, mulled wine, special settings for cappuccino etc.
If you want a milk frother that does it all, and does it very well – this is the frother for you. Yes, it’s much more expensive than most of its rivals but it does a great job and it makes creating your own authentic coffees very easy indeed.
What I like about the Severin SM 3587 Induction Milk Frother
- Huge range of programmes.
- Massive capacity.
- Temperature controls.
What I don’t like
- German company, frother made under licence in China.
- The price. But you do get what you pay for.
Severin SM 3586 Induction Milk Frother
The little brother to the SM 3587 the SM 3586 (Severin really needs to work on these names) is more or less identical to its sibling except that it has 5 selectable programmes instead of 13.
Apart from that it shares the same features; temperature controls, large 700ml capacity, induction technology, easy pour spout, dishwasher cleaning and, the big seller for me, a hot chocolate function.
The five programmes arguably make the Severin SM 3586 easier to use but the functions are selected in more or less the same way. Just spin the dial to the temperature you need and press the button to select the programme.
So, apart from the more limited functionality this frother is essentially the same as the 3587 though it weighs ever so slightly less. So, should you buy it?
For me the answer is no.
My reason being that although the reduced number of programmes may make it a little less confusing for some people to use there is no difference in price. For the same money you may as well buy the SM 3587 which has far more functionality.
What I like about the Severin SM 3586 Induction Milk Frother
- Large capacity.
- Stylish design.
- Easy to use.
What I don’t like
- Pricing doesn’t make any sense.
Severin SM 3585 Induction Milk Frother
It also has less selectable programmes including the standard three; hot or cold foam and hot milk though it does have the extra hot chocolate function too. Which is a big bonus for me.
If you want to make hot chocolate from chunks or flakes this is the milk frother (and the other two Severin models) for you.
The dial is different to the others but operates in the same way. Simply turn to select the programme you want and press the button. However, there is no temperature control with this frother.
It also features the 360° LED light ring which displays red or blue for hot or cold as well as an audible alarm when the programme ends. The stainless steel container is easily removable and is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning.
Although at 500ml the Severin SM 3585 has a lower capacity than the other Severin milk frothers it is still around double that of most other milk frothers.
It is cheaper than the other two models but again I would personally recommend you spend a little extra and go for the higher capacity and more functionality of the Severin SM 3587.
What I like about the Severin SM 3585 Induction Milk Frother
- Easy to use rotary dial.
- Dishwasher safe removable cup.
- Hot chocolate function.
What I don’t like
- Limited programmes compared to other Severin frothers.
- Expensive for a standard frother.
Severin SM 3590 Handheld Milk frother
The SM 3590 is a handheld milk frother. The only one of its type which Severin produce.
The Severin handheld frother is very easy to use. It’s battery powered of course and the batteries are housed in the body of the device. The battery door is at the end of the handle.
To froth your milk firstly heat it in the microwave (or on the hob) and make your foam by inserting the steel whisk head into the milk and holding down the pulse switch on the front of the frother.
After around 30 seconds you’ll have a thick froth with which you can make any type of frothy Italian coffee.
For those who aren’t sure what a handheld frother is, the video below should clear up some of the confusion.
Should you buy this handheld frother? If you’re looking for Severin reliability and performance but you don’t want to spend much cash, the Severin SM 3590 is for you. It’s around £100 ($130) cheaper than the SM 3587 and produces very thick froth.
If you don’t mind heating your milk separately then you should certainly plump for this frother.
What I like about the Severin SM 3590 Handheld Milk frother
- Very powerful for such a small device.
- Tremendous value for money.
- Pulse button works better than on most handheld milk frothers.
What I don’t like
- Battery compartment can be a little fiddly.
So, that’s all of the Severin milk frothers reviewed. Just to reiterate my recommendation is that the Severin SM 3587 is the best Severin milk frother. You can learn more about it on Amazon here.
So much for the milk frothers. What about the company itself?
Who Are Severin?
When it comes to coffee making, there are some brands that have a reputation far above that of their competitors. And, when you think about masters of engineering, manufacturing and innovation, German companies always spring to mind.
Combine these two things and you get Severin; an electrical appliance manufacturer that has built an immaculate reputation and a passion for appliances over 120 years.
If you love a good cup of coffee, it is likely that you have used or at least looked into owning a Severin product and with everything from milk frothers to espresso machines on offer; coffee fans won’t be left disappointed.
In our guide to everything you need to know about Severin, we will give you a detailed introduction to this outstanding brand. Let’s get started.
A History Of Severin
Severin, more formally known as Severin Elektro is a German company that was founded back in 1892 in Sundern. Back in those days, the company was nothing like it is now and actually came into existence off the back of a blacksmith’s shop.
The man who began the company was named Anton Severin and his vision began with a company known as Anton Severin Metallfabrik.
In the early days, the company prided itself on forging curtain rods but it didn’t stand out even in its own backyard. There were many competitors in and around the Sundern area that also specialised in this type of product so if Severin was to elevate itself from the crowd, it would need to take a different path.
Surprisingly, this new path wasn’t taken until much later, in 1921. It was at this point in time that the brand began to branch out into the production of tableware; specifically that made from aluminium.
The company also underwent changes where its name was concerned and emerged from the First World War under the title of Severin Elektogerate GmbH. This was part of the Severin empire, A Severin and Co, which parented several other companies.
Just a year down the line and the company expanded even more so it was time for a new location. Severin remained within the town of Sundern but it wasn’t long after this that the brand took yet another turn and ceased production of its aluminium tableware.
It would have appeared to the outsider that the company wasn’t sure of its direction, but this couldn’t have been further from the truth. The success of the brand today is living proof of this.
A short time after this, Severin began focussing on producing coasters and plates as well as a range of serving trolleys which were introduced a little later on. The success of these products wasn’t to be seen until after the Second World War and the currency reform when consumer demand went through the roof.
Owing to this increasing success, it came as no surprise that Severin needed a bigger factory and so, in 1948, the company moved into much larger premises which were ideal for higher capacity manufacturing. This further expansion also allowed the brand to focus on electrical goods and it began their production in the early 1950s.
The main focus here was on producing household electrical appliances and this is something that the brand remains famous for today. It would appear that this was a niche in the market that Severin was easily able to step in and fill because from the mid 1950s until 1962, Severin just kept on expanding.
It went on to create a further four factory halls as well as a branch in the small town of Wenholthausen. It was here that a focus on coffee machines began. While the factory started off creating fan heaters and drying hoods, it wasn’t long before coffee machines became the main product manufactured here.
Moving forward to the late 60s and yet another factory popped up that was dedicated to the production of the plastic parts for the electrical appliances. By the time the company had been in operation for 75 years, it was now the proud producer of more than 200 different types of electrical appliances.
Today, Severin is still going strong and the company boasts a massive range of products that range from egg cooker to grills, kettles to toasters and of course, the coffee machine. They even produce larger appliances like vacuum cleaners.
The company may have been the vision of a single man but today, it operates across 80 nations and has thousands of employees. Moreover, the company has sales offices located all over Europe.
However, much of the production of the appliances today doesn’t happen in German factories and while this is a relatively new venture for the brand, all production is now located in China. This includes all their milk frothers we have reviewed above.
What’s more, the Severin brand now no longer rests in the family of its founder since in 2015, almost half of the shares were bought out only to be followed by the remainder in 2018 meaning that Knauf now owns the company outright.
Is Severin a trustworthy brand?
Having won several awards, there is no denying that Severin is one of the best electrical appliances brands out there and yet, its name isn’t heard as often as some others. But nonetheless, it continues chugging along in the background, producing hundreds of electrical goods that boast quality and reliability that isn’t often seen.
Most recently, Severin won the Kitchen Innovation Prize for its latest grill and we are in no doubt that the prizes will keep on coming. According to online reviews, as many as 91% of customers would recommend Severin to a friend and the brand has an average rating of 4.4; while this may not be perfect, what is?
As far as we are concerned, this is one of the best manufacturers of barista coffee machines, milk frothers and accessories in the world.
What products does Severin make?
If you hop onto Amazon or the Severin website, you will see just how many products this gigantic company makes. As we mentioned earlier, they make a huge number of different products for the kitchen as well as household and personal care products. But what we are really interested in are the coffee products; after all, that’s one of our favourite things.
As we’ve already discussed, Severin makes a range of milk frothers and what we really love about this company is the diversity.
They sell a range of electric milk frothers but also have the option to purchase a handheld milk frother which a lot of people prefer because of its small size and convenience. But whichever you choose, you will benefit from having beautifully frothed milk just like what you would find in your favourite cafe.
But of course, there isn’t much point in making frothed milk if you don’t have any coffee to put it in and Severin has got you covered. The company makes a huge range of coffee grinders, espresso machines, filter coffee makers and kettles.
If you’re looking for a company that has everything you will need to equip your kitchen for coffee making, then there aren’t many others that are quite as effective.
But if all of that wasn’t enough, Severin also makes a barista starter kit which is perfect for those just getting started on their coffee journey.
Coffee lover = Severin fan
Severin has a history that spans 120 years and while the brand has been through quite a few changes during this time, it remains firmly established as one of the best manufacturers of electrical appliances on the planet.
With more than 200 different electrical appliances currently on offer including a range of coffee machines, accessories and milk frothers, it is no wonder that Severin is one of the coffee lovers go-to companies.
