The Aeroccino milk frother is, and has been since its release, one of the most popular milk frothers around. The quality of the device, its reliability and the fact that it produces beautifully frothy milk has made it a market leader. But buying a Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother is complicated because there are two versions. But what’s the difference and which is the best Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother? We’ll answer these questions and more here.
Nespresso – one of the biggest names in coffee
Nespresso is a brand that is well known for its coffee pod machines and the capsules to go with them. However, did you know that the brand also makes a range of coffee accessories that allow you to create delicious barista style drinks right in your very own kitchen?
Milk frothers are an essential part of making a foamy coffee and Nespresso produces two of the very best. While it is possible to purchase a milk frother as part of a bundle with some of the Nespresso machines, many people prefer to buy them separately, especially considering that, for some models, you need to take out a pod subscription to be able to buy the bundle.
Personally I’ve always used a standalone milk frother together with an espresso machine to make my coffee.
In this guide, we will compare the Aeroccino 3 and the Aeroccino 4; two of Nespresso’s best-selling milk frothers, and help you decide which one to buy (you’ll find a list of this week’s best selling Nespresso milk frothers at the foot of the page).
What’s the difference between Aeroccino 3 and Aeroccino 4?
The major difference between the two models of Nespresso milk frothers is that the Aeroccino 4 has more foam options with two types of hot foam compared to the standard three; hot, cold, heat milk on the Aeroccino 3.
When you think of an electric milk frother, you could be forgiven for thinking that they are all made equally. After all, their primary purpose is to make foamed milk; how many differences could there really be? Well, there are some significant differences between the Aeroccino 3 and the Aeroccino 4 and some may surprise you.
For starters, there are some key design differences in that the Aeroccino 3 is not as strong or durable as the Aeroccino 4. The Aeroccino 4 has complete stainless-steel housing which just makes it feel better quality. The Aeroccino 4 also features a handle for ease of use. That said, many would agree that the Aeroccino 3 is far more aesthetically pleasing.
Moreover, there is a huge difference in how these two appliances must be maintained. If it is simplicity you are looking for then the dishwasher safe design of the Aeroccino 4 is going to be a major selling point.
On the other hand, the Aeroccino 3 cannot be put in the dishwasher, nor can it be submerged in water making it more difficult to clean.
You will also notice that the froth options are far more versatile on the Aeroccino 4 with the ability to make everything from hot and cold milk to dense froth and a light airy froth. In contrast, the froth options of the Aeroccino 3 are much more limited with the only real versatility being in the density of the froth.
As a result of this, the design of each appliance is further separated. The Aeroccino 4 features an additional control panel that allows you to select the way you would like your milk frothed whereas the Aeroccino 3 simply has an on button.
Can I use a Nespresso milk frother with Nespresso coffee machines?
Nespresso makes a variety of different coffee machines across two ranges: the Original range and the Vertuo range. These machines aren’t the same as a complex barista machine that might have a built-in milk frother but there are options to purchase a machine and a frother as a bundle.
You can then use the Nespresso pod machine to make your chosen coffee drink while using your Aeroccino milk frother to create the foamed milk that will become the finishing touch to your beverage.
Pros and cons of the Nespresso Aeroccino 3 milk frother
If there was one thing we noticed about the Aeroccino 3 milk frother it was how quietly it operates. For anyone who doesn’t want noisy kitchen appliances, this is certainly a worthy contender. Moreover, it features a modern design that would look great on the countertop without ever being considered an eyesore and consigned to the back of a cupboard.
Looking at the Aeroccino 3 independently of its Aeroccino 4 counterpart, we see that this is a versatile milk frother that will more than provide you with everything you need in terms of foamed milk. However, as soon as we compare it to the Aeroccino 4, we see that this versatility is somewhat limited.
What’s great about the Aeroccino 3 is that it is incredibly easy to use. It features a simple button without any complicated controls so may be ideal for people who have not used this type of equipment before. Or for those who want a quick and efficient way to froth milk. The frothing time is fast.
One thing that a lot of people demand from coffee accessories is that they don’t break the bank. The Aeroccino 3 is the cheaper option and still creates a premium foam when compared to the Aeroccino 4. Of course, we again must point out its one major flaw; that it doesn’t create as many different types of frothed milk.
Moreover, you should also keep in mind that this product is not dishwasher safe so is much more difficult to clean. While the speed and ease of use make this a great entry level frother, this convenience is somewhat spoiled by this downside. Though, to be fair, not being able to pop something into the dishwasher really shouldn’t be a deal breaker.
Pros and cons of the Nespresso Aeroccino 4 milk frother
For anyone who is looking for a premium milk frother, the Aeroccino 4 is, without a doubt, the best option of the two. This is an upgraded version of the Aeroccino 3 and comes with many more interesting and diverse features. It compares well with other premium frothers such as the Severin models.
While the controls of the Nespresso Aeroccino 4 are slightly more complex than the eroccino 3 given that you must select the type of frothed milk you would like, these are certainly not overly complicated and a set of four buttons on the base of the machine make things much simpler than you might expect.
Moreover, the overall design makes the Aeroccino a delight to use thanks to the addition of a handle and a spout both of which make pouring your milk much simpler and safer.
In terms of durability, the Aeroccino is a superior appliance since it is made primarily from stainless steel and boasts a ceramic coating. This means that it is far better able to resist heat and won’t wear as easily over the course of time.
An obvious pro of the Aeroccino 4 is that it can be cleaned in the dishwasher. For convenient clean-ups, this cannot be beaten. Many electric milk frothers, including the Aeroccino 3 do not benefit from this feature and must be taken apart to clean which is extremely time consuming.
There aren’t too many cons to the Aeroccino 4. It’s a versatile and reliable machine that produces excellent quality foamed milk. However, if we were to home in on a significant downside, it would have to be that this appliance is much more expensive.
Aeroccino 3 vs Aeroccino 4 – which is the best Nespresso milk frother?
After having read our rundown on the two machines, you might be fooled into thinking that we would always back the Aeroccino 4 over the Aeroccino 3, but this is not the case. Yes, while the Aeroccino 4 is a far superior appliance in many ways, this isn’t always a good thing.
For people who want an affordable milk frother that allows them to create foamed milk for the most well-loved coffee drinks like latte and cappuccino, the Aeroccino 3 gives you everything you need without the hefty price tag.
OK, there are a few downsides in that it is not dishwasher safe, and the materials are not quite as durable but in terms of value for money, you are getting something incredibly reliable that produces excellent froth.
On the other hand, if you are someone who likes a little more versatility with your coffee accessories, you would be far better off with the Aeroccino 3 that produces a much wider variety of foamed milks.
One thing that a lot of people think about when buying a milk frother is the capacity and that can be the deciding factor. However, both appliances have the same capacity of 8.1floz which is equivalent to one cup of milk.
Let’s sum up the Nespresso Aeroccino milk frothers
If you’re a fan of the Nespresso coffee pod machines, then you have probably considered buying some of the other appliances that are available from the brand. Milk frothers are an essential tool for coffee lovers and Nespresso has some great options.
When choosing between the Aeroccino 3 and the Aeroccino 4, you should think about the types of milk that you would like to produce as well as considering your budget. In any case, both products will afford you the opportunity to create incredible quality foam.
Personally though I’m a big fan of always buying the latest versions of any kitchen appliance. Which is why the Aerocinno 4 gets my vote (and cash) as the Nespresso milk frother to buy.
