For truly thick foam to make the frothiest coffee including cappuccino and cafe latte you need a manual milk frother. This may come as a surprise but with a manual frother you can create as thick a foam as your milk allows. This is because you can keep frothing until the foam is super thick.
By contrast an automatic milk frother uses pre-set programmes which can’t be overridden. That means the density of the foam will always be more or less the same. But with a manual frother you and you alone determine the thickness of the foam.

What is a manual milk frother?
A manual frother is the most fun you can have in the kitchen. Well, OK, that’s an exaggeration. But I really enjoy using my manual frother. They are super easy to use and anyone can create a lovely thick foam for their coffee.
As the name suggests these frothers don’t use electricity or batteries. They are powered purely by hand. The device consists of two parts. The carafe which holds the milk and the lid which has the plunger. The froth is created by moving the plunger up and down.
How to use a manual milk frother
The process of using a manual frother is a very simple one.
1 – Fill the frother with cold milk up to, but not over, the maximum line. To make one cup of coffee you don’t need very much milk.
2 – Place the lid on top of your carafe with the pour spout (if fitted) in the closed position.
3 – Now you can begin to froth the milk. You do this by pushing the plunger which is positioned on top of the lid up and down.
4 – The more you move the plunger the thicker the foam you create. For a really thick foam press the plunger for 40 seconds. You can experiment by plunging for varying lengths of time.
5 – Pour the milk into your coffee. Now you’ll need a spoon to mix in some of that lovely thick foam that is left in the carafe.
6 – If you want warm foam firstly heat the milk in the microwave (be careful not to scald the milk) then follow steps one to five as above.
Note: Some of the glass frothers can be placed directly in the microwave. Others can’t. And of course, the stainless-steel models must never be put into the microwave. In these instances, heat the milk first and then pour into the frother for foaming.

Choosing the best milk frother for thick foam
Any of the frothers we’ve highlighted above will whip up a storm. They produce extra thick foam for you every time. But don’t overdo it. If you keep pressing that plunger, you’ll finish up with a butter like texture more suited to spreading on toast rather than a dense foam to top off your coffee.
