Best milk frother for soy milk

While many people opt to use cow’s milk for frothing, there are millions around the world who prefer a dairy-free diet. Either as a health and lifestyle choice or on principle. For those of you who use plant-based milks the great news is that there are plenty of dairy alternatives that can be used for frothing and for adding to your favourite coffee-based drinks. One of the most popular of which is soy.

We know that soy milk is one of the most widely used dairy alternatives, but will it yield the same thick foam that full fat whole milk does? Fortunately, soy milk is one of the best milk alternatives to use for frothing, but first.

What type of milk frother to use with soy milk?

Our go-to frother for plant-based milks is the Severin SM3587. We were so impressed we’ve written a full review which you can read here.

Unlike other electric milk frothers the Severin has dedicated programmes for frothing vegan milk including soy. This puts it head and shoulders above most of the other automatic milk frothers on the market.

By the way, if you’re confused about the different types of milk frother you can buy we’ve summed everything up in this long-read article; What is a milk frother, how to use it and FAQs.

But back to the Severin SM3587. It’s fully automatic so all you have to do is pour in your milk, select the soy option and temperature you require, click the dial on the front of the machine to confirm your choice and sit back. In one to two minutes you’ll have nice warm frothed milk to make your soy latte or cappuccino.

Frother alternatives

One of the reasons that soy milk is so popular in coffee making is that it has excellent versatility. Not only can it be used in a variety of coffee-based drinks, but you can use different types of milk frother to create your foam.

A handheld milk frother gives you a quick and affordable way of frothing soy milk and doesn’t take up a lot of room in the kitchen. However, as we will discuss shortly, traditional plant-based milks don’t froth as well as full fat milks.

Nevertheless a powerful handheld milk frother will do a decent job of creating the foam you need. We recommend the Zulay Kitchen Milk Boss. You can read our review of this cracking little device in this article; Milk Boss review.

There are also other ways that you can froth milk if you don’t have a milk frother to hand. Using your French press is a viable method when you’re in need. Though the results won’t be as good as when using a dedicated milk frother.

If you’re still looking for a milk frother these are our most recommended models.

Why do people drink soy milk?

Soy milk comes from the soybean and is a popular choice for people who cannot or do not want to drink dairy products. Extracts from the soybeans are mixed with water and many manufacturers of the product will also add a variety of vitamins to the blend.

The reason that some people don’t drink dairy might be because they choose to follow a vegan diet which prohibits the use of animal products. Others choose to drink soy milk as a replacement for dairy as they have allergies and intolerances. Cow’s milk can be very fatty and so a lot of people who are trying to lose weight will opt for soy milk instead.

However, while soy milk may be less fatty than cow’s milk, many of the other nutritional benefits are the same. This is great for people who want the balanced nutrients that cow’s milk can offer without the need to consume unnecessary calories.

But while soy milk is often associated with vegans, there are plenty of non-vegans who drink soy milk because of its many health benefits.

Benefits of soy milk

Soy Milk is rich in omega 3 fatty acids which are essential for many reasons including keeping the heart and cardiovascular system healthy. What’s more, these fatty acids will reduce inflammation in the blood vessels and can even ease an abnormal heart rhythm when taken in higher doses.

In addition to this, soy milk is bursting with plant-based proteins which are not only generally much healthier but can also promote strong muscles. This protein will also ensure that your internal organs remain healthy and functioning correctly.

There is also evidence to suggest that soy milk can promote better brain health and has even been associated with a lowered risk of progressive conditions like dementia.

Soy milk is far less fatty than cow’s milk and so, when taken as part of a balanced diet may be able to help you maintain a healthy weight. What’s more, soy milk contains as few as 80 calories per cup whereas there are up to 150 calories in a cup of cow’s milk.

There has been a lot of discussion about the fact that soy products may contribute to certain cancers, particularly breast cancer. However, this outdated belief has now been disproved by science and it is now considered that moderate amounts of soy may have the opposite effect and reduce the risk of breast cancer. Of course, as with anything, there can be too much of a good thing and consuming large amounts of soy might not be as healthy and none of these claims can be substantiated by ourselves and should not be construed as medical advice.

Different types of soy milk

Soy milk comes in one of two different forms. Regular soy milk is what you will typically find on your supermarket shelves and out of all the dairy alternatives, this is the best when it comes to frothing as it gives the best texture.

That said, it still won’t give the same texture as whole cow’s milk, but coffee experts have developed a barista blend soy milk that froths in very much the same way as dairy. It has a much more consistent workability allowing you to create the tiny bubbles needed for the perfect foamed milk.

If you haven’t already tried it we’d recommend you give barista blend milk a try. It doesn’t taste different, it foams really well and is still vegan. You can find this type of milk at your local supplier or online. We’ve listed the three most popular varieties of barista blend milk available at Amazon below.
