Best milk frother for oat milk

Dairy isn’t for everyone. Whether you follow a vegan diet or are looking to eat more healthily, there are a lot of plant-based milks that are suitable for anyone who wants to avoid dairy products.

Oat milk has become a very popular choice but one of the biggest problems for coffee lovers and cappuccino aficionados is that it doesn’t froth in the same way as cow’s milk.

Which means of course creating that rich and creamy foam for your coffee isn’t as easy. In fact, it’s almost impossible.

Unless you use barista style milk. These are specially formulated vegan milks which include non-dairy additives like oil, gum and lecithin’s.

This alters the consistency of the foam the milk produces to produce bubbles or foam with a thicker consistency that lasts far longer than other plant-based milks.

The good news is that there are a lot of barista blends out there in different flavours that are designed specifically for frothing and will allow you to create foamed milk that much more closely resembles dairy products.

Oat milk is one of the most popular barista blends available.

Which milk frothers work with oat milk?

There are several types of milk frother and depending on your preference, you can use any of these with barista blend oat milk.

This is the key; using the right type of oat milk, as we have discussed. The type of frother you use won’t make too much of a difference and the results will be similar.

However, there are some pros and cons to the most common types of milk frother. The handheld milk frother is a great choice if you want a compact appliance that delivers foamed milk that is remarkably similar to what you would get in a cafe.

However, they do require you to do some of the work. That said, you have greater control over the texture and can keep frothing until the desired texture is achieved.

On the other hand, an electric jug milk frother will heat the milk for you and all you need to do is put the milk in the jug and press a button. This is ideal if you want convenience but you have to keep in mind that you’ll be relying on the pre-set timings which might not result in the exact texture you are looking for.

Let’s get more specific. Here are my choices of the three best milk frothers for oat milk (more information below the table).

Why use oat milk?

There is a massive selection of plant-based milks and while everyone has their preference, it has become obvious that oat milk is one of the better replacements for cow’s milk.

While it does have an undeniably oaty aftertaste, the initial flavour of this milk is closer to cow’s milk than anything else. Moreover, it has one of the highest fats and protein contents of all plant milks and so is similar in terms of health benefits to cow’s milk.

But that’s not all. Since frothing milk relies on proteins that are only found in full fat cow’s milk, the high protein and fat levels in oat milk mean that it will froth much more effectively especially when compared to things like cashew milk and soy milk.

oat milk barista blendOat milk also has a wide range of health benefits. Many people believe that plant-based milks are only suitable for vegans.

We’ll go into more depth on this later on, but in reality, a lot of people choose to include it in their diet to reap these many benefits.

For example, oat milk is packed with vitamins including high levels of vitamins A and D. It is also full of iron, riboflavin, potassium and calcium.

But what is most impressive about oat milk is that it has a very high carb count which translates into slow-released energy.

If you include oat milk as part of your breakfast routine, you will find that you feel more energetic and fuller for longer over the course of the morning.

Finally, oat milk is incredibly versatile and can be used for so much more than coffee.

While we would always opt to grab a milk frother and create a beautiful foamy coffee, there are other options.

This type of milk can be used for cereals, cooking and even as a standalone drink.

Is oat milk only for vegans?

Oat milk is an excellent option for people who follow a vegan diet but it is by no means an exclusive food.

Anyone can enjoy the benefits of drinking oat milk and owing to its very similar taste to cow’s milk, many people who want to make the replacement without sacrificing taste would do well to use this milk.

What’s more, oat milk is perfect for people who suffer from a lactose intolerance and again will replace cow’s milk without losing that creamy, sweet taste that so many of us love.

Can I use oat milk in frothy coffee?

If for some reason you don’t want to use barista blends or don’t have any available oat milk is one of the better options for frothing when it comes to choosing a plant-based milk.

More and more cafes are now including this as a menu option and the results are very similar to cow’s milk. This is likely because the two share a similar texture and ability to take on tiny air bubbles which is what is needed to froth.

That said, while you may have some luck frothing regular oat milk, the best results can be achieved by using a barista blend oat milk. These products are designed specifically for frothing

Why use oat milk for frothy coffee?

Oat milk has become a popular substitute for cow’s milk since it shares a very similar taste and is one of the better options for frothing compared to other plant-based milks.

That said, you’ll likely struggle to get the same texture, unless you are using a blend that has been specially created for frothing.

These are known as barista oat milks and are widely available meaning that if you have a lactose intolerance, follow a vegan diet or simply want to be healthier, you can still enjoy your favourite frothy coffee every morning.
