Who doesn’t love hot chocolate? But I do have to admit something. I probably enjoy the choccy beverage more than most. Or at least more regularly than most. I don’t drink coffee or tea so if I do want a hot drink – it’s chocolate every time for me. And that usually translates into three or four cups of hot chocolate a day.
So, I’m claiming to be a bit of an expert. And I’ve done a fair bit of research into what is the best milk frother for making hot chocolate. Which I’m happy to share.
In a hurry?
Do I need a milk frother to make hot chocolate?
You don’t absolutely need one. You can make instant hot chocolate with boiling water. But it’s a similar scenario to saying you don’t absolutely need a car to travel 200 miles as you could walk instead of driving. But why would you?
For great hot chocolate you need a milk frother. Or a bespoke hot chocolate maker. But we’ll come back to that shortly. First of all let’s look at milk frothers.
Types of milk frother for making hot chocolate
There are four types of milk frother. You can use them all for making great cups of chocolate.
Automatic milk frothers
Easy to use as they have a range of settings you select with the press of a button.
They usually have a detachable base for the power and a carafe or jug like stainless steel body. Some have a handle. Others have a soft grip body.
Most have three automatic settings; cold foam, hot foam and milk heating.
They usually have two interchangeable whisks – one for foaming and one for heating.
Handheld milk frothers
These powerful little devices are great fun. And very effective. Only around 25-30cms in length and powered by batteries they are brilliant for quickly frothing milk for your hot chocolate. In just 30 seconds you can create lovely, rich foam to top off your chocolate. These are very affordable and for the very best you’ll only need to pay between 10 and 20 pounds.
Manual milk frothers
These are basically milk pitchers with a lid that contains a plunger. Very easy to use and great fun too. Pour your milk into the jug, close the lid and pump the plunger up and down to create your foam. It only takes a few seconds to create a surprisingly frothy foam. Like the handheld models these are very affordable devices.
Stovetop milk frothers
The least popular type of frother. Like a traditional coffee pot you put the frother on a hob for it to work. You can’t use them on an induction hob but nevertheless they are very effective for those who enjoy a more traditional approach. They work by pouring your milk into the carafe, heating on the hob and then frothing the warm milk by using the push/pull plunger on the top of the device.
Bespoke hot chocolate makers
These are small appliances specially made for making hot chocolate. Unfortunately you don’t have a lot of choice here. But there is some good news. Following the runaway success of the Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser (more on this below) it does seem more manufacturers are going to be releasing their own hot chocolate makers. Stay tuned.
How to make hot chocolate in your milk frother
There’s lots of different ways to make hot chocolate in your milk frother. Here’s four different techniques depending on which milk frother you have.
Warning – however you make your cup of chocolate be very careful when heating the milk. If it’s allowed to boil it won’t froth. For the best hot chocolate the milk needs to be warm but not more than 60 degrees. Use full fat milk for the best results.
Real hot chocolate with a handheld milk frother
Use cooking chocolate – you’ll only need a few pieces, three should be fine. Pop the chocolate and a teaspoon of sugar into a glass of milk. How much milk you use is up to but try 200ml. Pop the milk into the microwave for a few seconds to melt the chocolate. Don’t leave it in too long. The chocolate will melt quickly. Remove the class from the microwave and use your handheld frother to create a nice foam. That’s it. Very quick and very easy. Once you’ve got the hang of it you can experiment with different types of chocolate.
Instant hot chocolate with a handheld milk frother
Add your powder to the milk, give it stir and warm in a saucepan or microwave. Once heated, use your frother to generate the foam. You can see how we did it in the video below. Though we probably overdid the froth.
How to make hot chocolate with a manual milk frother
Follow the same procedure as with the handheld frother. Use a few chunks of chocolate and heat the milk in the microwave. You can use a saucepan if you prefer. Pour into the carafe of the frother, replace the lid and begin pumping the plunger. Remember the more you pump the handle the more froth you’ll generate so experiment to find the amount of foam you prefer.
Making hot chocolate in an automatic milk frother
This is so easy. Pour your milk into the carafe, add chocolate flakes and select the hot foam setting. Sit back and relax or take the opportunity to get the bourbons out of the cupboard. After around two minutes your hot chocolate will be all ready to enjoy. Simples.
Making hot chocolate in the Velvetiser
This works very much like an automatic milk frother. Pour your milk into the Velvetiser taking care not to go above the maximum fill line. Add your chocolate flakes (you don’t have to use the expensive Hotel Chocolat branded flakes) and turn on the device. The machine mixes and froths your milk with the flakes and two minutes later you have a lovely cup of hot chocolate. To learn more about this marvelous machine read our full review here.

What to look for when buying a milk frother
There’s probably three main factors to consider when you’re thinking about buying a milk frother for making hot chocolate:
- How often you’ll use it.
- How easy and quick the device is to use.
- How much it costs.
If you’re going to be regularly using the device it’s best to choose a robust model – one which can withstand heavy use. The cheaper handheld frothers (under £7) should almost be considered disposable. They can’t cope with heavy use.
The same can be said of the cheap manual frothers as the pumping mechanism is prone to breaking. As for reliability the better frothers all have guarantees including the top of the range handheld and manual devices.
On the other hand if you’re looking for a device which is really easy to use then handheld and manual frothers can’t be beaten. Even the automatic milk frothers only require you to press a button.
No milk frother is difficult to use. Which is great news for the technically challenged among us. With a handheld and manual device you can create your foam in around 30 seconds. An automatic device will take between one and two minutes.
Cost may also be a factor. But you can buy a sophisticated frother for under £50. So whatever your choice you won’t break the bank.
