Milk frothers are perfect for making foamy coffees like cappuccino and caffe latte. But did you know a milk frother also makes perfect hot chocolate? The best milk frother for hot chocolate is a Severin but you can also use a handheld one. I use the Zulay Milk Boss but I’ll also cast my eye over the other frothers you can use including manual and automatic milk frothers.
In a hurry?
Best milk frother for hot chocolate – Severin SM 3587.
I recently had an epiphany. It wasn’t quite an Archimedes in the bath eureka moment, but it was pretty profound. At least to me.
When it comes to choosing the best milk frother for making hot chocolate there really wasn’t much of a choice. Or at least there wasn’t if you were looking for an automatic frother.
You can of course use a handheld milk frother and this is the method I use at home. I explain more about this below and it is a really easy way to make a very tasty hot chocolate.
But if you want a more hands off approach your options are somewhat limited with automatic milk frothers. Or least you are if you want to use ‘real’ chocolate. You can use powder in most automatic milk frothers.
But, if you wanted to use proper chocolate flakes you did run the risk of the chocolate not melting and clogging the whisk. Using chucks of choccy was definitely out.
But not anymore. Introducing…
Severin SM3587 – the best milk frother for making hot chocolate
Unlike most other automatic milk frothers the Severin SM 3587 has a dedicated hot chocolate function. It’s one of 13 different programmes you can choose from and the great news is that you can use actual chocolate chunks.
Of course the smaller the chunks the better but nevertheless this elevates the Severin frother way above its rivals.
Making a creamy hot chocolate is so easy with this Severin frother. Pour your milk into the jug, add your chocolate and then select the hot chocolate function with the rotary dial on the front of the appliance. Then sit back and in around two minutes you’ll have a terrific cup of hot chocolate.
Do I need a milk frother to make hot chocolate?
To be honest – no you don’t. But only if you’re happy with instant hot chocolate or cocoa made with powder and boiling water.
However, if you want a delicious, creamy and, well, frothy hot chocolate then you most certainly do need a milk frother.
Believe me, as an unashamed hot chocolate lover, once you try your choccy made with a milk frother you won’t go back to instant. Ever.
And the kicker is that making an incredibly tasty and frothy cup of hot chocolate is so easy. And you won’t believe how cheaply you can do either.
In short you can make Costa quality hot chocolate for pennies.

Hang on, is that it?
It is. Don’t get me wrong. There are other ways to use a milk frother to make hot chocolate. But this is one of the simplest. Let’s go through it step by step.
My patented (not really) hot chocolate recipe
- 3 pieces cooking chocolate.
- 250ml whole milk.
- Teaspoon sugar or coffee syrup (optional)
- Handheld milk frother.
- Measuring jug or milk frothing jug.
Making your hot chocolate
- Put the chocolate into the jug.
- Add the milk.
- Add sugar or syrup if required (the drink will be sweet without).
- Pop the jug into the microwave (50 – 120 seconds depending on model).
- Give a quick stir with a spoon.
- Foam with the milk frother for 30 seconds.
- Pour hot chocolate into your glass or cup.
This is a really simple recipe, quick to prepare and tastes delicious. And you can experiment and use different kinds of chocolate. Use your favourite choccy bar like a Yorkie, Milky Bar or any other solid chocolate.
Why boil a kettle and use instant powder when you can whip up a luxurious cafe quality hot chocolate in just a couple of minutes with your milk frother?
Other ways to make hot chocolate with a milk frother
In the video above I used a handheld milk frother. And I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a pretty easy process.
But you can use other types of milk frother to make hot chocolate and it’s just as easy. We’ll look at a couple of different ways.
If you really must have instant hot chocolate
I know I’ve dissed using instant in this article so far but it’s time to hold my hands up. I have to admit there are times when you have no choice but to scoop a few spoonsful of powder into a cup and boil a kettle. When you’re making your bedtime drink for instance.
If you’re at work you’re going to drag a milk frother around with you and of course there are times when even the best of us just can’t be arsed. We just want a hot chocolate as fast as we can with no fuss. Which is why my guilty secret is always having a few jars of instant in the cupboard.
The even easier way to make hot chocolate with a milk frother
If you have an automatic milk frother there is a super-easy way to make hot choccy. But, to be honest, it’s a bit of a cheat. And it involves…. Instant hot chocolate powder.
You’ll see a lot of automatic milk frothers advertised as being perfect for making hot chocolate. This is true to a degree. Although they don’t have a specific hot chocolate function you can use their ‘heat milk’ setting.
Simply spoon your powder of choice into a cup. Heat the milk in your frother and pour the warm milk onto the powder.
It’s still instant hot chocolate but it will taste much better than when made with boiling water. But it’s not as tasty as the chocolate chunks recipe we outlined above in the video. Nevertheless, it’s quick (around two minutes for the milk to heat), easy (you just press a button on the frother) and tastes pretty good.
A little controversial
There is another way you can use an automatic milk frother to make hot chocolate. Now, this is a little controversial as the manufacturers of the milk frothers don’t recommend this.
You can make an awesome drink by putting chocolate flakes in the frother while you heat and froth the milk. I’ve used this method on a number of occasions. But…
Big disclaimer – I’m not recommending you do this as it could invalidate the warranty on your milk frother. This why I recommend the Severin SM 3587. as it can handle proper chocolate chunks thanks to its special hot chocolate funtion.
Back on safer ground
If you have a manual milk frother you can use the exact same recipe we used above. The only difference is that if you use a frother like the Bodum Latteo you can put the carafe into the microwave. You then use the plunger to froth the milk. If you’re not sure how to use a manual milk frother you should check out the video below.
So, after all that… which is the best milk frother for hot chocolate?
OK – here’s the thing. To make genuine, frothy and above all, tasty, hot chocolate you shouldn’t use an automatic milk frother.

You must use a handheld or manual frother so you can use real chocolate.
Only real chocolate will give you the luxurious drink all chocoholics crave.

Bonsekitchen Milk Frother
Many critics rate this frother more highly than the Milk Boss. And it’s hard to argue against it. Very powerful and easy to use – you just hold it like a pen. Yet it can make creamy foam in around half a minute.
It’s a few quid cheaper than the Milk Boss and there really isn’t much to choose between them.
Press the on button and you’ll be surprised at how easily the metal whisk head whips up a thick froth.
Make the perfect froth with the Bonsenkitchen milk frother! Battery operated; this handheld device of simple operation is a must have for any coffee enthusiast.
It has a sleek and durable body making it easy to take anywhere you go and comes equipped with a simple on/off switch.

The only manual frother in our top three but it’s a very good one. This is one of the few manual frothers which has a heat resistant glass carafe (they are usually stainless steel).
The glass carafe is microwave proof which means you can heat and froth the milk in the same jug.
The froth is created by the easy-to-use plunger. This means you do have to do a bit of work for your foamy milk.
Do be aware that if you have arthritis in your wrist this type of frother won’t be suitable for you.
You can see the Bodum Latteo in action in the video above.
- 0.25 litre.
- 8 oz.
- Made from heat resistant borosilicate glass.
- Silk plastic lid.
- Dishwasher safe.
- Easy to hold handle.
- Manual frother.
- Froths in 30-45 seconds.
