If you’ve been on any foodie social media account in recent times, you can’t have failed to have missed the hype around Dalgona coffee. This frothy, whipped coffee has certainly been a hit with food and drink lovers but making it does require the best equipment, if you want to get it spot on.
What is Dalgona coffee?
In 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown, Dalgona coffee suddenly became of great interest to Starbucks and Costa fans who couldn’t get down to their favourite coffee house for a sip of a delicious beverage.
Since coffee lovers were having to come up with ways of making drinks at home, a lot more focus was placed on various coffee-based beverages with an immense spike in the search terms for Dalgona coffee
Unlike traditional coffee drinks, Dalgona is a whipped beverage that consists of instant coffee blended with sugar and hot water. The ingredients are whipped together in equal amounts until a thick foamy consistency is achieved. This unique mixture is then poured onto iced milk and voila! An incredible coffee-based drink with a whipped top that looks amazing in an Insta shot!
What’s so special about Dalgona coffee?
According to Wikipedia, Dalgona coffee was not only brought to the attention of coffee fans in 2020 but it was also invented in this year. So, it can lay claim to being one of the newest and perhaps most innovative coffee trends today.
What makes it so special is not so much the drink itself but how it came about. As we have mentioned, the coronavirus lockdowns that affected the entire world meant that people couldn’t go out and order coffee so they needed to get their caffeine fix another way.
In fact, Dalgona coffee has such a close association with the pandemic that many have dubbed it ‘quarantine coffee.’ Beginning its popularity in South Korea, Dalgona soon made a global name for itself.
Not only did the drink make life that little bit sweeter for coffee fans during the lockdowns but it also managed to bring people together in a world where social interaction was incredibly limited.
The drink was made by millions around the world who took to social media to share their take on the food craze and as such, many new online friendships were established. Now that’s something that not every type of coffee can do.
What makes Dalgona coffee different?
If you live in, have ever been to India or are a fan of its food culture, you may have experienced the traditional beaten coffee which is loved in this country. Many have compared Dalgona coffee to this beverage but there is one thing that makes our beloved Dalgona different; the mix is added to the milk.
In the Indian version of the coffee, milk is poured over the whipped coffee, sugar and water mix giving it a very slightly different finish.
In the Dalgona version of the drink, that important whipped top makes the coffee much more photogenic and in a world where social media was the new way to interact, the drink simply had to look good.
Is Dalgona coffee bad for you?
You might be surprised to learn that there have been a lot of health benefits associated with Dalgona coffee. However, owing to the very high sugar content, it doesn’t take a dietician to work out that too much wouldn’t be good for you.
Moreover, with the presence of caffeine, albeit less than some other coffees, we have to warn you to err on the side of caution as too much can result in increased heart rate, insomnia and anxiety, among other things.
That said, according to Times Now News, Dalgona coffee could help with weight loss, may improve issues with acid in the digestive system and will give you a boost of energy.

How do you use your milk frother to make Dalgona coffee?
It is possible to use a hand whisk or other tool to get that beautiful whipped texture that everyone loves about the Dalgona coffee. However, since the hand milk frothers that we have discussed are so simple to use, you won’t need to exert anywhere near as much effort.
To begin, you will need to mix the coffee, sugar and water together in a cup, bowl or whatever you have lying around. You will need to make sure that the water is hot; fresh out of the kettle after just boiling is best as this will dissolve the instant coffee much more easily.
You can insert your milk frother into the mixture, switch it on and let it do the work. If you find that your mixture doesn’t whip, it could be because you need to add a little more.
Most people would agree that doubling the ingredients will make life easier and if you have some left over, you can make two coffees and chill one for later.
