Add barista blend milk into the mix and you’ll be turning out wonderfully frothy coffee with thick creamy foam in no time. Every time.

Flashing that Costa card will be a thing of the past as will be tut-tutting at yet another disappointing cappuccino made by a youth who is more interested in checking social media than making a great coffee.

Best barista blend milkOATLY Oat Drink Barista Edition

It’s always been the case that to make real barista quality coffee at home you need to have a very good coffee machine. Ideally it will have an integrated grinder but it will definitely need a milk frother. This allows you to make great frothy coffee like cappuccino and latte.

If you’ve already got a coffee maker a good quality standalone milk frother will elevate your homemade beverages to a whole new level. We reveal our favourite frothers further down the page.

You do of course also need to use the best coffee beans available. It doesn’t matter how good the equipment is; if you use cheap, nasty beans the end result will be a poor tasting coffee.

But, one thing that has changed very recently, is the type of milk you can use. Yes, vegan or plant-based milk has been around for a while but what is new is the advent of barista blend milk.

What is barista blend milk?

In a nutshell (pun intended) barista blend milk is formulated to be steamed and to create a thick creamy foam. Usually, plant-based milk doesn’t give great results when used with a milk frother. This is because on its own non-dairy or non-fat milk lacks the lactose and other elements to create a foam.

But barista blend milk brings all the foaming qualities of dairy milk without compromising on its vegan and lactose free qualities. Barista blends also don’t separate which makes them perfect for use with milk frothers.

What is the best barista blend milk to use with a milk frother?

There are a few different blends to choose from. These will make the best frothy coffees imaginable. By the way, all the milk we discuss below is long life and will last up to 12 months unopened.

Oat

A favourite of vegans everywhere this type of milk is made from whole oat grains. It does have a creamy texture and is slightly sweet.

Best for making frothy coffees is the Oatly barista blend. It’s made from liquid oats and has 10% oat content. Unlike ordinary oat milk this barista blend makes wonderful foam. It can be as dense and as creamy as you like. If you’re into latte art this is the milk you need. It’s perfect for all frothy coffee and for use in milk frothers.

It’s available in great value multipacks. You can also buy it on subscription. You can check the latest price of Oatly on amazon by clicking here.

Almond

Almond milk is probably the most popular non-dairy alternative. Made from blended almonds and spring water it’s a lovely rich alternative to dairy. It’s perfect for anyone with lactose, soya or gluten intolerance.

Obviously, this type of milk is a no-no if you have a nut allergy. As ever, if you have allergies, always carefully read the ingredients on any drink or food before using.

There are different varieties of barista blend almond milk available. Our choice is Blue Diamond’s Almond Breeze. It’s made from Californian almonds and when used with a milk frother produces a fantastically rich and thick foam for cappuccinos and lattes.

Almond Breeze is available from Amazon. You can buy it in multipacks and Amazon also offers a subscription service with which you can order a regular monthly delivery to your home.

Soya

Soya, or soy, call it what you will, is probably the most recognisable of all the non-dairy alternatives. It’s made from grinding and soaking soy beans. It first became really popular in the 1980s. Fast forward a few decades and the new barista blends are just as popular now.

If you want to try soya in your frothy coffee, I would highly recommend Alpro. It’s specially created for baristas and you’ll love it at home. It creates a really nice foam. You can buy Alpro professional barista blend at Amazon in great value catering packs if you wish.

Pea

Pea milk? Really? Doesn’t sound very appealing does it? Nevertheless, it’s becoming more popular as an alternative to dairy milk.

It’s not made from green peas but rather yellow split peas. Which still doesn’t sound particularly appetising but it goes remarkably well with coffee.

If you’re into frothy coffees you need to give pea milk a try. It makes great foam and will provide a lovely creamy froth for your cappuccino and latte.

If you want to give pea milk a go you should try SPROUD barista blend pea milk. It’s not as sweet as some but has been developed specifically for making frothy coffee. It’s gluten, dairy, soy, nut and allergen-free.

So, you can feel really good and healthy about your morning coffee. It’s rich in protein and tastes delicious. Give it a try. You can find it on Amazon here.

Coconut

There are plenty who claim that coconut milk makes the best lattes around. That’s a matter of opinion of course but if you do enjoy the taste of coconut adding this milk to your frothy coffee will certainly take it to the next level.

The milk is made from the pulp of mature coconuts. Coconut has a lot of saturated fat but has a lovely sweet taste.

One of the best-selling coconut milks is the Alpro professional barista blend. It has a wonderful consistency and is much creamier than milk. It is brilliant in coffee and makes a wonderful creamy foam for latte and cappuccino.

Like all barista blends Alpro coconut milk can be purchased from Amazon in single packs or in great value multipacks. You can see it on Amazon here.

Hemp seed

Hemp is one of the more unusual milks we can use for frothy coffees. As the name suggests the milk is made from hemp seeds. The seeds are ground and soaked in water. It’s low in saturated fats and cholesterol free.

Used in a milk frother hemp seed milk provides a creamy textured foam. One of the best barista blends on Amazon is from Good Hemp. If you want to try something different give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised.

You can check the latest Amazon price for Good Hemp’s milk here.

So, there you go. Six different barista blend milks to try. But to make great frothy coffee with your milk you need a milk frother or coffee machine with a built-in frother to complete your home barista set up.

Duomishu milk frother

An automatic electric milk frother and one that certainly looks the business. It’s a lovely shade of ‘Cadbury’ purple and will be a nice addition to the kitchen. But, of course, looks aren’t everything. Especially when you’re wanting a nice frothy coffee to get you going. So, is the Duomishu a milk frother to be reckoned with or is it just another pretty face?

You’ll be delighted to learn this milk frother works as well as it looks. It has a rapid foaming function and creates a rich textured foam in one to two minutes. Perfect for lovers of cappuccino and latte. It’s especially effective with barista blend milk for that extra special froth.

Features of the Duomishu milk frother

  • Three different gears (hot foam, heat, cold foam).
  • Supplied with two different whisks.
  • Milk indicator.
  • 160ml capacity for foam (350ml for hot milk).
  • Double wall design for extra insulation.
  • Non-stick interior.
  • Power: 400 watts.
  • Base with UK plug.

How to use the Duomishu milk frother

It’s very easy to create a great frothy coffee with this milk frother. Just a matter of pushing a button really.

Simply insert the correct whisk (to create froth you need the spring head whisk), add your milk (maximum and minimum levels are indicated inside the container) and then press the button on the handle. Press once for hot foam, twice to heat milk or press three times for cold foam. It’s that easy. By the way, as you press the button a little icon lights up so you always know which function you’ve chosen.

When you’ve finished your frothing session simply remove the container from its base and rinse it under a tap. Remember to clean the device after each use.

It’s a very easy device to use and at under £40 is excellent value too.

newoer Electric Milk Frother

A standalone milk frother with four automatic settings this is a great device for frothing or cold barista blend milk. You can froth up to 160ml of milk and it will make a very thick warm foam or a cold foam to add to your prepared coffee. Just a quick note here – if you look at this product on Amazon the manufacturers say it has a capacity of 350ml. But be aware this is the capacity for heating milk. For frothing, 160ml of barista blend milk will produce the frothy foam you’re looking for.

Features of the newoer Electric Milk Frother

  • Fully automatic.
  • 4 settings.
  • Double insulated, double wall design.
  • Ergonomic handle.
  • Made from stainless steel.
  • Power: 400W
  • Motor speed: 2300 rpm/min

Using the milk frother is very easy. A simple push of a button will produce the foam (or warm milk) you need for great looking and tasting lattes, cappuccinos, coffee, hot chocolates, macchiatos and flat whites. It features an automatic cut-off when the foam is ready. It usually takes around two minutes to make a foam so it’s not the fastest milk frother out there but it really does the job. And, I know I’ve already said this, but it really is so simple to use.

The newoer frother is very quiet when it’s working away. Which is always a good thing. Another plus point is that compared to many other milk frothers and coffee machines it’s quick and easy to clean. It has a non-stick coating so after use just rinse the inner tank with water and, if necessary, give the exterior of the device a quick rub with a cloth.

Enloy manual milk frother

And now for something completely different. So far in our search for the best milk frother for barista blend milk we’ve looked at automatic devices. They do all the work for you. You basically just click a button and pour. Not so with the Enloy manual milk frother.

As the name suggests there are no easy automatic functions with this little beauty. You have to put some effort in. Not that it’s exactly hard work. But a manual milk frother is exactly that. You use the device to manually froth your milk by repeatedly pumping the handle.

All of which sounds a pain. But it really isn’t. And this great little device creates surprisingly luxurious foam. Ideal for your frothy coffee. And you can even kid yourself you’re getting a work out when you make your coffee.

Features of the Enloy manual milk frother

    • Large 800ml capacity (enough foam for 2 -3 cups of coffee).
    • No running costs (no batteries or electricity needed).

  • Very easy to use.
  • Easy to clean.
  • Made from stainless steel.
  • Dishwasher safe.

How to use it

Making any kind of frothy coffee is a simple process:

  1. Prepare your coffee in your espresso machine.
  2. Pour warm (or cold) barista blend milk into the Enloy.
  3. Replace the lid and pump the handle up and down 20 – 30 times.
  4. Pour your creamy foam onto your coffee.
  5. Enjoy your smooth and foamy coffee.

When you read other reviews about this frother they do tend to be mixed. But if you’re aware of what you’re buying, i.e., a manual device, you’ll have no complaints with this little device. And it’s such good value for money too.

What to look for when choosing your milk frother for barista milk

When looking at milk frothers there is a huge number to choose from. In this article we’ve narrowed the search down to just three models. But in essence your choice will depend on what type of device you want and how much you’re willing to pay.

As we’ve seen an automatic frother is a simple push button device which delivers hot or cold foam quickly and easily. Usually in two minutes or so. These devices are very convenient as you literally just press a button. They aren’t that expensive either. You can find a very good automatic milk frother for between £30 – £40.

However, manual milk frothers are faster at preparing a froth and cheaper than automatic models. But you do need to pump the handle which may be too much hassle for some. Also, the plungers on some manual frothers do have a tendency to break.

While we do recommend an automatic or manual frother as the best for barista blend milk we haven’t mentioned the other three kinds of milk frother which are available.

The better-quality coffee machines will have a built-in frother and you can also use a small handheld battery-operated device. The third option, which is admittedly the least popular, is the traditional stovetop frothers.

So, you do have lots of choice. But hopefully the three milk frothers we’ve reviewed on this page will point you in the right direction. If not, there is a ton of articles, reviews and buyer’s guides on this site to help you out.
